Cadet Wing Changes

— Cadet Charge of Quarters (CCQ)

To my knowledge, this duty was suspended for a while during the COVID period but has recently been reinstated with much stricter guidance. 2nd degrees have to serve 3 hours a month, and 3rd degrees have to serve 4 hours a month. Group staff members will monitor at least 50% of CCQs between 1600 and Taps to ensure cadets are performing their duty in the correct uniform. This is part of the effort to encourage cadets to interact more within the squad since we have to sign in each night for accountability.

OPINION - I've browsed through my fair share of old yearbooks in preparation for podcast guests and have seen plenty of pictures of CCQ throughout the years with descriptions of the task in the margins. To my understanding, CCQ was a way for cadets to act as a secretary for the squadron with duties of phone calls and greeting officers and guests. However, the purpose of CCQ has been obscured due to shifts being after the duty day (with rarely any visitors) and everyone having their own cell phone. Despite this, I still enjoy sitting at the 5th-floor Northeast corner of Vandy Main for an hour, saying hello to friends as they come by to sign in for the night.

— New Plans for Mitchell Hall?

Last semester, Chef Robert Irvine spent a few days at USAFA, giving briefs, hosting a cooking competition, and even hitting the gym with some early bird cadets. In one of the briefs to the class of '26, he mentioned his dedication to enhancing the dining experience in Mitchell Hall.

OPINION - I really hope this pans out. Personally, I meal prep off-base every Sunday to dodge the reliance on corn dogs for sustenance. Improving this part of cadet life would be fantastic - not to mention it'd save me a couple of bucks each week. Don’t get me wrong, the MH staff works hard and is often understaffed, making dealing with us cadets a bit frustrating. However, many of the food options for cadets with heavy workloads aren't exactly great for feeling awesome or performing at our best.
